Statement from the president
Statement from the president/ The Japan Assotiation of Breast and Thryroid Sonology.
I am deeply honored to have been appointed president of the Japan Association of Breast and Thyroid Sonology (JABTS). I feel privileged to be following in the footsteps of my esteemed predecessors including Dr. Ei Ueno, the association’s first president, Dr. Masashi Kitaoka, Dr. Hidemitsu Yasuda, Dr. Seigo Nakamura, and Dr. Hiroko Tsunoda.
JABTS has continued its efforts to study ultrasonography to accomplish the association’s following objectives: To improve the health and welfare of Japanese citizens by advancing ultrasonic diagnostics for mammary and thyroid gland diseases through studying ultrasonography, and by contributing to the improvement in diagnostic accuracy and treatment of patients with mammary and thyroid gland diseases. There are over 2,700 active JABTS members, and this number is likely to soon reach 3,000.
Our guidelines and guidebooks for ultrasound diagnosis of mammary and thyroid gland diseases have been through several revisions and reprints, and have been used as valuable textbooks in Japan. Furthermore, our association has to play an active role in urgent issues such as the introduction of breast ultrasound screening in women with dense breasts.
The association has provided continuous support for thyroid ultrasound examination in the Fukushima Health Management Survey, which began after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. We also performed thyroid ultrasound screening in Aomori, Yamanashi, and Nagasaki prefectures, which was commissioned by the Ministry of Environment to compare the results we obtained in Fukushima. The comparison results helped relieve Fukushima residents from anxieties over such matter.
Furthermore, the association has contributed to the progress of ultrasonography for mammary and thyroid glands, both domestically and abroad, through education in workshops, research under the initiative of doctors, and the development of ultrasound standards for guidelines and guidebooks.
In my role as president, together with my fellow board members, it is my wish to further the development of JABTS via an increase in membership, a successful transfer of the association from a non-profit organization to a general incorporated association, and overall improvement of our infrastructure. I hope that, with your guidance and encouragement, we can achieve these goals together.
